Leimbach’s film crew were the first into the notorious Asmat tribal region of New Guinea, since that tribe killed – and supposedly ate – Michael Rockefeller, the son of the then USA Vice President.
Rockefeller was there collecting their enormous wood carvings for the New York Metropolitan Museum. It was this same Art that lead Leimbach and his team to make this feature-length doco. Leimbach wanted to understand how this naked Asmat tribe could have such a fearful reputation for head hunting and cannibalism and yet produce some of the finest Art in the tribal world. The film was premiered on BBC’s WORLD AROUND US, became a hit at the Melbourne Film Festival and played in the NY Met theatrette for years.
